The Golden State. The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) protects homeowners and consumers through regulating the construction industry. The CSLB policies promote the health, safety and general welfare of the public in matters relating to construction. In California, anyone who contracts to perform work on a project for $500 or more for labor and materials must maintain a current, valid license from the CSLB. You can verify the license on-line by license number or by contractor name. If you do not have access to a computer you may call 1-800-321-CSLB (2752). Note that in California, a contractor license number does not contain alphabetic (a-z) characters and will not be more than 8 digits. A cautious statement from CSLB states: REMEMBER Most licensed contractors maintain competent, honest and hardworking business practices that are financially responsible. Georgia
The Peach State. Pursuant to Georgia law, the following types of contractors must obtain a license from the State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors by July 1, 2008:Residential-Basic Contractor (Contractor work relative to detached single family and duplex residences and one-family townhouses not over three stories in height). Residential-Light Commercial Contractor (Contractor work or activity for multifamily and multiuse light commercial buildings and structures). General Contractor (Contractor work unlimited in scope regarding any residential or commercial projects). There are some special rules relating to Traditional Specialty Contractors and licensing in Georgia. IN SUMMARY:Under O.C.G.A. § 43-41-17, specialty contractors do not have to hold a license as a residential or general contractor if they are performing work within their specialty.
